5 Tips for Buying a Designer Bag for Less

how to buy a designer bag for less

It seems like our designer bag wish list is getting longer, with no end in sight.  Whether it’s the Dior Book Tote or the Chanel Flap Bag, there are plenty of beautiful luxury bags and we want them all. I’m sharing 5 tips to get you one step closer to your dream bag while saving some money.

5 Tips for Buying a Designer Bag for Less

1: Seek out the Unique.

Trendy and seasonal colors go on sale more often than classic colors such as black or nude. If you love color, then this is a perfect way to add bright hues to your closet. In my opinion, red bags are as much of a classic as black. If you really don’t like color territory, then consider getting a colored bag dyed to black.  You’ll need to find a great handbag or shoe repair service and the dye job will run you about $75-$100 but it’s a potentially cheaper way to get you that designer bag of your dreams.  If you’re like me, opt to find the it bag but in the vintage version like the Louis Vuitton Cannes Bag or Gucci blondie bag.  You’ll still have a popular style, but it will truly be unique.

2: Shop International.

Don’t assume that international sites like Farfetch or Matches Fashion are off limits because of the exchange rate. These international sites don’t charge tax, generally offer free shipping, and the pricing is much cheaper than retail. That’s a lot of savings there especially when you account for the nearly 10% sales tax here in California!

3: Buy Secondhand.

If my blog didn’t give it away, I will always opt for vintage over new. If you’re not into vintage, can I interest you in saving about 40-70% and buying second hand? Shop at a local trusted consignment shop or Vestiaire Collective which has an amazing selection and guarantees authenticity. (use code US4U6V for $50 off any purchase +$150)

4: Shop Friends & Family Sales.

Saks, Neiman Marcus, Shopbop, and Bloomingdales all have yearly and bi-annual Friends & Family sales offering up to 25% off designer and luxury items.  Be patient, wait it out and get your bag with a big discount.

5: Sign up for Sale Alerts.

I love Vestiaire Collective even though it’s great for my wardrobe but bad for my checking account. When you add an item to your wish list you’ll get an alert, every time the price of the item is discounted! I scored my pink Gucci disco bag for more than 60% off thanks to their app.
