Luxury Guide to Vintage Shopping & Designer Resale in Tokyo and Kyoto

I couldn’t wait to explore the world of vintage shopping and designer resale in Japan! I went to every single spot that was considered the “it” location for vintage and designer resale and it did not disappoint! Tokyo and Kyoto have something special to offer whether you want thrifty finds or more luxury pieces. Shopping in Japan will spoil you as the customer service is incredible! The employees at every store were attentive, kind and so helpful. If a store didn’t’ have what I was looking for, they would point me in the right direction.

Shopping Tips:

Authentication is Key: When purchasing luxury items, ensure authenticity. Ask for certificates of authenticity and do your research on brand-specific details.

Bargain with Respect: In Japan, bargaining isn’t common, but it’s acceptable at some flea markets and smaller shops. Be polite and respectful when negotiating prices.

Size Matters: Japanese sizing can be smaller than Western sizing. Always check the size and try items on if possible.

Language Assistance: While many shopkeepers in Tokyo and Kyoto speak some English, it’s helpful to learn a few basic Japanese phrases or have a translation app handy.

Cash is King: Some vintage shops may not accept credit cards, so carry enough cash. Higher end shops will accept credit cards and will offer duty free shopping as well.

Plan Your Visit: Research shop hours, as some vintage boutiques have irregular schedules or are closed on specific days.

Tokyo and Kyoto offer a unique blend of contemporary fashion and vintage charm. Whether you’re seeking a classic Chanel bag, a vintage kimono, or a one-of-a-kind accessory, these cities are a treasure trove for fashion aficionados. Remember to immerse yourself in the local culture, be respectful, and, most importantly, enjoy the thrill of discovering your own vintage and designer treasures in Japan. Happy hunting!
