Luxury Guide to Vintage Shopping & Designer Resale in Tokyo and Kyoto
I couldn’t wait to explore the world of vintage shopping and designer resale in Japan! I went to every single spot that was considered the “it” location for vintage and designer resale and it did not disappoint! Tokyo and Kyoto have something special to offer whether you want thrifty finds or more luxury pieces. Shopping in Japan will spoil you as the customer service is incredible! The employees at every store were attentive, kind and so helpful. If a store didn’t’ have what I was looking for, they would point me in the right direction.

Here are my recommendations for vintage and second hand shopping in Tokyo and Kyoto:
Tokyo

Maiko Antiques:
– Maiko Antiques deserves it’s own spot on this list because it’s that good! It’s a tiny stored filled from floor to ceiling with the very best antiques and vintage goods. I scored 4 vintage silk kimonos, woodblock prints, Kokeshi dolls and more tchotches to bring back home. I swear it’s a one stop for all your vintage wish list finds.
Teramachi Street:
– Explore Teramachi Street, a historic shopping district in the heart of Kyoto.
– Discover second-hand kimonos and vintage accessories at Kimono-ya and Yojiya Café.
Kiyamachi Street:
– Kiyamachi Street offers a mix of traditional and contemporary stores.
– Look for vintage kimonos and antique accessories at Sukiya Kimono and Morita Kimono.
To-ji Temple Flea Market:
– If you’re lucky enough to visit on the 21st of the month, check out the To-ji Temple Flea Market for vintage textiles, ceramics, and clothing.
For Designer Goods, Don’t Miss:
Decouverte
Decouverte is a renowned vintage and second-hand store in Kyoto, offering a diverse range of high-quality designer fashion pieces. The store’s collection includes vintage jewelry and accessories. I purchased my vintage Celine vanity here!
Brand Off
Brand Off also has a presence in Kyoto, offering a selection of second-hand luxury fashion. The prices here were very reasonable and I loved seeing a bit more color in the Kyoto store compared to the Tokyo location.
There’s a Rag Tag and several 2nd Streets here so be sure to hit them up because you never know what you’ll find!
Shopping Tips:
Authentication is Key: When purchasing luxury items, ensure authenticity. Ask for certificates of authenticity and do your research on brand-specific details.
Bargain with Respect: In Japan, bargaining isn’t common, but it’s acceptable at some flea markets and smaller shops. Be polite and respectful when negotiating prices.
