Minimalist Bedroom Update
You know I’m a maximalist, but you’re wondering why you’re looking at pictures of a minimalist bedroom. Well, many of you have been following our bedroom progress since the bathroom reveal and know that several elements of our bedroom project are delayed. Alan and I decided to get it finished as “stage 1” until we can complete it the way we’ve imagined it at the end of the year. Some of you LOVE the minimalist vibe of the bedroom, while the rest of you expected much more design from me (I feel you). While our bedroom is pretty, you know I love colors and prints, so I’m giving the clean, crisp, minimalist life a try for a bit until we can get to the finish line 😉
I shared about how happy I was to add fans on our patio, but I’m SOOO happy we have a fan in our bedroom. If you’ve never had a fan in your bedroom, trust me that it’s a life changer. I sleep so much better at night with air circulating even if we’re running the heater or air conditioning. It’s nice to have that feel of fresh air throughout the day and at night. We opted for the Bureau fan by Hunter, which has a LED light built in. The fan itself has a French deco design to it, which works well in the current aesthetic but will look even better when we install our wallpaper and paint the ceiling. The fan features a marble glass covering, plus black and brass elements so the overall look is modern and design forward. I also love that I can control the fan speed and light with a remote. Everything’s better when it can be turned on and off with the press of a button, right? I also love that I can turn off the light without leaving the comfort of my bed.
Our first big purchase for the bedroom was the bed, mattress and sheets! I’m obsessed with our bed you guys. I love the semi gloss black paired with the cane back – it’s just so timeless, elegant and modern. For our mattress, I did a ton of research on non-toxic mattresses and came across Brentwood Home’s Cedar Natural Luxe Mattress which is 100% GOTS organic certified. The mattress is Greenguard Gold Certified® using CertiPUR-US Certified® foam. Harlee’s mattress is also from Brentwood Home, and I seriously sleep better knowing that we’re all sleeping on safe mattresses. The duvet and sheet set are from The Citizenry. They’re made from the oldest, family-run linen mill in Portugal, and each piece is Oeko-Tex® certified and made sustainably in a fair-trade environment. These are so important to me – all natural materials, sustainability, ethical production – and I’m so glad brands like The Citizenry and Brentwood Home make their products affordable while meeting some of these really important production practices. I can literally go to sleep feeling proud of our decision.
I found this vintage desk several months ago on Facebook Marketplace for $30 to use as my vanity. Our old bedroom had a built in vanity, which I loved so I wanted to have a similar set up in our new bedroom. When our in-laws were staying with us, my mother-in-law painted it in a semi-gloss black finish and it looks incredible. I found the pulls on an architectural salvage website which elevate the look of the desk.
One night I decided to jump on Facebook Marketplace to see what was available and I came across this pair of American of Martinsville nightstands for $200. They are in excellent condition and I knew immediately they were exactly what our bedroom was missing. They work so well with our bed, vanity and vintage rug. Plus, they were located about 50 miles away and I desperately needed to leave the house and go for a leisurely drive #winwin
So what’s next for our bedroom? You can catch a glimpse of the mood board here. As you’ll see, I want more color, more prints, more patterns, and overall more luxe and moody vibe for the bedroom. Once we select our wallpaper, then we’ll move to getting custom curtains and shades and a settee or chaise to go on the opposite side (from my vanity). We also need some more artwork above the bed and throughout the room (and maybe a plant or two as well).
