The Shopping List No. 35: Cloisonné Jewelry

I recently bought a really sweet vintage cloisonné locket with the prettiest rose inlay for my niece. Last year I bought a beautiful heart pendant in Italy and I recently saw my friend Beth wearing a similar one, so I thought it was time to share it with you all. While cloisonné can be expensive especially when it comes to vases, trinket boxes and other decor elements you can find affordable costume jewelry that’s perfect for gifting or adding to your jewelry arsenal.

Now a bit of history…The word cloisonné is a French word meaning to be compartmentalized or be cut off from one another and is used to identify the technique as well as the finished product. The cloisonné technique originated in Egypt prior to 1800 BC, and in early 14th Century AD the technique reached China. Chinese cloisonné enamel is a truly distinctive art form with centuries of craftsmanship refining and creating truly one of a kind pieces. Cloisonné originates from many places but the most distinctive and renowned is Chinese (especially in home decor and accents) so if you’re out shopping keep an eye out for it.
