Vintage Clothing Brands to Buy If You Love Modern Boho

One of the longest lasting trends in both vintage and contemporary fashion is modern bohemian. Of course the term modern is relative to the decade but boho has been going strong since the 70s. It’s definitely one of my go-to search terms on eBay (read this if you need a primer on how to use eBay search function to find exactly what you want) and when I do shop new I’m usually eyeing brands that skew more contemporary bohemian like Ulla Johnson or Sea NY.

At the top of the list for vintage bohemian is Gunne Sax. If you’re not familiar, the American brand (under Jessica McClintock) produced prairie, Victorian, and Edwardian-styled designs which drew on many popular elements in American fashion such as lace, gingham, and calico.  The recent Cottage Core trend has sent the price of Gunne Sax dresses through the roof! I used to snag Gunne Sax dresses for under $40 on eBay and flea markets; now I’m lucky if I see anything for less than $150. Case in point: I have this exact dress which I found on eBay for $45 and it was listed/sold for $850 recently. I CAN’T EVEN. While I love Gunne Sax, I wouldn’t spend more than $100 on a dress unless it’s a true unicorn piece. Since I don’t shop for trends or seasonally, I’m willing to wait for the trend to die down a bit and hopefully pricing will adjust. While Gunne Sax gets all the love, these brands are just as popular among vintage lovers and the pricing is much more reasonable. Plus, I always want to discover under the radar designers or pieces that no one else will have!

Brands Similar to Gunne Sax

  • Young Edwardian: junior line that was inspired by the Edwardian trend in Britain, with very romantic, colorful, and trendy pieces. Fun fact: Sue Wong was an intern and designer for the brand before she went out on her own
  • Candi Jones
  • Mindi Malone
  • Jody T

Knitwear & Outerwear Brands

If you’re looking for Ulla Johnson style sweaters with fringe, pom pom and beautiful handknitting, shop these trends. Because the brand names are so vague you’ll have to really dig through eBay to find them. Another option is to utilize the reverse image search to find sweaters that are similar. • Le Sweater
  • Pom Pom Label
  • Ms Pioneer: the epitome of cool 70s suede and fringe goodness! So many contemporary brands replicate the suede fringe jackets or vests, but none come close.

Bohemian Luxury Brands

  • Judith Ann Creations – Her pieces were inspired by her world travels, especially India, so her pieces feature embellishments such as sequins and beading. Pricing is definitely higher but having seen pieces IRL, they are stunning. Many pieces are also available in extended sizing!
  • Diane Freis: flowy, blousy, and loose fitting with bold prints and colors, this is a gorgeous brand for dresses that really do it all. Most of her vintage collection is only made in a limited number, so the chances of finding two identical dresses is near impossible.
