Vintage Chanel bags were made with the finest leathers and hardware, and every stitch and detail was carefully hand crafted by skilled artisans. Modern bags are machine made and there is little to no hand detailing. In 2008, Chanel stopped using 24k gold-plated hardware, and instead, started to use gold-toned hardware, subtly differentiating vintage and modern pieces. While the 24k gold-plating can rub off over time it can easily be re-dipped and repaired. The newer colored metal tarnishes and changes color over time, making it incredibly hard to refinish without comprising quality. The superior craftsmanship means that vintage Chanel bags not only look better but also last longer. I sent my 1980s Chanel for repair and the gold plating was still excellent condition but I did opt to have it replated for a fresh look.
